Over the years we’ve done a lot of braai-ing. Doing this effectively – especially when we’re cooking for several hundred (or thousand!) people over the course of a few hours – requires a dependable and long-lasting source of coals.
Nam-Char charcoal (not briquettes) is the product that has given us the best results, but we don’t feel entirely comfortable with using charcoal that’s been trucked that kind of distance, and which is based upon a scarce resource, in the form of Namibian hardwood.
On Sunday we needed additional supplies in a hurry and picked up some Wonder bio-carbon briquettes. True to the claims on the bag, they burned for longer than the Charka briquettes and left less ash. And, because they are made from waste bio-mass we don’t have to worry about slow-growing trees getting chopped down unnecessarily.
