Idolising Idols

by Andrea on August 11, 2010

Idols is back (which means I won’t be answering my phone between 5.30 and 7.00 on Sunday nights).

If last night’s opener, covering the Cape Town auditions, is anything to go by it’s going to be the best season ever. We had everything, from the returning (no-hoper) wooden mic winner proudly saying how many times in the past year he’s sung “happy birfday” in the Spur (thats’ singing?), to the nervous contestant farting louder, and more tunefully, than she sang.

Heart strings were tugged by the wheelchair contestant, as well as two others whose fathers had cancer. One of these – a swimsuit model – was given a “Yes!” by Gareth and Randall without even opening her mouth. More emotional stuff came from Elvis Blue, a Garden Route musician who teaches guitar in poor communities and who took the name of a 12-year-old student of his who died of AIDS.

It’s going to be good!
